Athletic put on show in Cadiz

Ernesto Valverde's side score four in fantastic performance against the Andalusians

Athletic Club defeated Cádiz CF 4-0 at the Nuevo Mirandilla. It was an ambitious display by the Lions, backing up the hype and excitement which has been generated over the first two fixtures.

A second consecutive victory for the Lions. What's more, they could have netted more tonight, the Bilbainos missing a penalty and having an Oihan Sancet goal dubiously ruled out for offside.

A Gorka Guruzeta brace, as well as goals from Iñaki Williams and Alex Berenguer completed a superb night much to the delight of the more than 600 fans who travelled all the way down to Cadiz.

Athletic, who picked up a third clean sheet in a row, took control from the outset, Berenguer going close with a well-struck free-kick and the Williams brothers wreaking havoc among the home defence.

The first goal came in the 23rd minute, Iñaki Williams capitalising on a bad pass from Santiago Arzamendía to Conan Ledesma before dribbling past the keeper and finishing from a tight angle.

Moments later, Nico Williams won a penalty from Alfonso Espino but Iñaki Williams failed to beat Ledesma from the spot. Athletic cared little. They continued to play their own game, only Álvaro Negredo managing to threaten for the home side.

Gorka Guruzeta came on for Iñaki Williams in the 54th minute. The strker, who returned to Athletic in the summer, did not take long to make an impact. In the 56th minute, Guru fooled the Cadiz defence with a smart feint before firing in a powerful effort from the edge of the box.

From there, the intensity increased. Sancet had a superb goal disallowed after a great team move in the 65th minute.

Berenguer soon scored the third, the winger finishing off another fine, flowing attack by Los Rojiblancos. Gorka Guruzeta made it 0-4 in stoppage time.

The icing on the cake was the debut of home-grown player Aitor Paredes, the central defender has been at Lezama since he was a 10-year-old.
