Athletic Club - Getafe CF

Athletic Club lost 0-1 to Getafe CF at San Mames. It was a difficult evening for the Lions. Jose Bordalas' side pressed relentlessly throughout the 90 minutes and take all three points after Borja Mayoral scored from their only chance of the match.

The visitors did a good job at frustrating Athletic, a feeling which was compounded by confusion over some of the referee's decisions.

The evening started with a beautiful tribute to Club Members with 50 and 75 years of membership and an emotional ovation to Jose Mari Argoitia, with the players wearing black armbands in the former Lion's honour.

It was clear from the start that Getafe were going to be a tough nut to crack. They didn't sit back and they won most of the duels.

Athletic had the only chance of the first half, Ernesto Valverde's side's clearest opportunity of the match, on the stroke of half-time. Oihan Sancet picked up a low pass from Jesus Areso in the box but his low shot was saved by David Soria.

After the break, Athletic tried to get the ball forward quicker. Gorka Guruzeta had a good chance on the half-turn, but his effort went wide.

Borja Mayoral deliverd the killer blow, picking up a loose ball after Unai Simón had pushed away an Adrián Liso header. There was a quarter of an hour left but an Urko Izeta free-kick aside, Soria barely had to make a save.

Now it's time to recharge the batteries and prepare for next week's derby against Real Sociedad.
