Athletic Club - Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappé, with a brace and an assist to Camavinga, plus Thibaut Courtois with some crucial saves, saw Real Madrid defeat Athletic Club 0-3 at San Mames on Wednesday night.

The Lions have little time to lick their wounds as they must now prepare to face Atlético Madrid in Bilbao this Saturday.

Unai Simón kept Athletic in the game with two early stops to deny Mbappé and Vinicius, but on the third attempt, Real Madrid took the lead when the Frenchman picked up a long pass and fired a rocket passed the Athletic shotstopper in the sixth minute.

The Lions tried to shake off their jitters and Gorka Guruzeta almost scored an equaliser as Courtois got a strong hand too his close-range volley. It was the first of two massive Courtois saves.

The Belgian thwarted Athletic again moments later with a tremendous left-handed save to turn away an Alex Berenguer shot in the box.

It was a shame. Above all because the San Mamés cauldron was absolutely boiling thanks to the 51,313 spectators in attendance.

Vinicius tested the fantastic Simón again and Xabi Alonso's men made it 0-2 in the 42nd minute when Mbappé teed up Camavinga with a header, leaving the midfielder with an easy chance to slot home.

Athletic tried with all their might to pull one back. Mikel Jauregizar tested Courtois from range, but the Belgian tipped the effort over the bar with an acrobatic save.

Mbappé made it 0-3 with a powerful effort from the edge of the box around the hour mark.

Athletic kept going and had their chances. Substitue Mikel Vesga misfired a volley in the area late on. It wasn't our night.
