Athletic Club - Getafe CF

Athletic Club drew 1-1 at San Mamés against a Getafe side that parked the bus in front of their goalkeeper David Soria after going down to ten men in the 65th minute.

The Lions faced an unphil battle after an early goal by Getafe striker Enes Ünal. However, the Rojiblancos drew level before the break thanks to Yuri Berchiche‘s left-footed strike.

Athletic had a number of chances to pick up all three points, but between Soria and a lack of accuracy, they had to settle for a point.

The Lions couldn’t have got off to a worse start, with Ünal heading in to make it 0-1 in the second minute. Athletic reacted well, Iñaki Williams particularly active and keeping Soria on his toes.

The visiting shotstopper kept out Iñaki before saving a header by Dani Vivian off an Iker Muniain free-kick.

The equaliser came in the 28th minute. Iñaki and Yuri linking up well before the latter fired past Soria.

VAR was decisive in the second half. First Mathias Oliveira had a goal overruled and a penalty for a foul on Oihan Sancet became a free-kick outside the box, with Getafe defender Jorge Cuenca picking up a straight red card.

There was still half an hour left with an extra man. Athletic had three clear chances, Williams going close before and Vivian threatened with a a couple of headers.

But Getafe were able to keep their composure and managed to keep Athletic at bay while staying out of trouble in the final stretch.
