Brilliant win over Atlético moves the Lions closer to Europe

Athletic Club beat Diego Simeone’s side 2-0 move to within a point of Villarreal in seventh place

Athletic Club managed a great 2-0 victory against Atlético de Madrid at San Mamés. An own goal by Mario Hermoso and an Iñaki Williams penalty saw the Lions move to within a point of Villarreal in the final European spot.

It was a real coup for Marcelino’s side. The Lions put in a performance full of character to ensure they have gone unbeaten against Atletico Madrid this season. A draw at the Wanda and two well-earned wins in the Supercopa and LaLiga.

Athletic made it 1-0 in the 8th minute. Iñaki Williams outmuscled José María Giménez as he powered into the box, before his cut-back across goal was deflected past Jan Oblak by Hermoso. Iñaki was on fire and continued to threaten, his cross quickly turning into a threat as Atletico failed to deal with it, letting it hit the post.

In the second half, Simeone’s team pushed for an equaliser with Antoine Griezmann’s rattling the crossbar with a free-kick early on.

However, in the 54th minute, Iker Muniain won a penalty after being brought down by Hector Herrera inside the box. Iñaki Williams stepped up and finished past Oblak with a panenka.

Oblak denied Athletic a third keeping out Muniain and Nico Williams in quick succession. Athletic stayed solid at the back, Atletico’s only real threat a Angel Correa effort which hit the post.

San Mamés cheered on their team in fine voice. What’s more, we’ve won another supporter in the shape of Jennifer Zietz, who was handed her One-Club Woman award at half-time by the legendary Erika Vázquez and academy player, Daniela Agote.

It was a great night, and we will be going all out for Valencia in seven days’ time.
