Atlético de Madrid - Athletic Club

Athletic Club fell to a narrow loss against Atlético Madrid on Sunday evening, with Antoine Griezmann scoring a late second-half goal for the hosts.

The Lions were competitive in the first half, having chances to take the lead, but the Frenchman's goal denied Ernesto Valverde's side any points on their visit to the Cívitas Metropolitano. 

Athletic Club, playing in red and white, started off very well. They regularly attacked Jan Oblak's box and came close to scoring on several occasions but utlimately lacked the finishing touch. Julen Agirrezabala, making his first LaLiga start this term, showcased his potential with a brilliant stop to deny Yannick Carrasco.

Nico Williams threatened early in the second half with a low shot, but was thwarted by Atlético de Madrid's Slovenian goalkeeper. The home side grew in strength after the restart and Griezmann gave Simeone's side the lead with a shot across the face of goal that Agirrezabala could not reach. Los Colchoneros kept a firm grip on the game from that moment onwards while Athletic struggled to respond

Before kick-off, Atlético de Madrid paid tribute to Los Leones for our 125th anniversary with a touching ceremony involving figures who had represented both over the years, such as: Javier Clemente, Andoni Goikoetxea and Javier Irureta.

The result leaves Athletic in seventh place in LaLiga Santander, two points away from Rayo Vallecano in the final European spot ahead of next week's clash with Girona FC at San Mames.
