Athletic rescue precious point at the death

Iñaki Williams scored a 94th-minute equaliser from the penalty spot to keep Los Leones in the race for Europe

With time running out and Athletic Club trailing 1-0 due to Lee Kang In's strike, the Lions had resorted to launching speculative balls into the box when Raúl García's shot hit Iñigo Ruiz de la Galarreta's arm.

Up stood Iñaki Williams, the Ghanian international beating Pedrag Rajkovic down the middle.

Athletic won't be leaving the Balearic Islands in sixth place, but they have taken a vital point heading into Thursday's clash in Bilbao, where a win over Real Betis would see them overtake Manuel Pellegrini's side in the standings.

Ernesto Valverde had rung the changes for the Mallorca match, with the side's busy schedule and Thursday's clash in mind: Aitor Paredes came in at right-back, Julen Agirrezabala started between the sticks and Nico Williams was on the bench.

Javier Aguirre's side are no pushovers. They play with an almost watertight low block. Pure cement. The only thing Athletic managed to do in the first half was get three yellow cards. Neither goalkeeper saw much action in the first 45.

Nico came on for Gorka Guruzeta at half-time and Athletic continued to look for a way through. But Mallorca sparked into life and turned the match upside down. First, Agirrezabala rushed off his line to deny Vedat Muriqi and then Amath hit the woodwork. It was third time's the charm for Mallorca, Lee Kang In breaming away at speed and playing a one-two with Amath before firing a left-footed shot past Julen.

Raúl García was doing his best to drag Athletic back into the match, the striker looking to score any which way he could before the penalty came. Iñaki, cool as you like, made no mistake from the 12-yard-spot.

Now it's time to think about Thursday. All is set for a classic night at San Mames.
