Athletic will fight to be in a Copa final again

The Lions qualify for a fourth semi-final in a row thanks to goals from Muniain, Nico Williams and Vesga at Mestalla.

For a fourth consecutive year, Athletic will have a chance of reaching the Copa final. It comes after a convincing 1-3 win at Mestalla, revenge against a Valencia CF side that stopped them reaching the final last year.

The Lions were outstanding in defence and knocked out Los Che with three decisive blows in attack, much to the delight of the 700 fans who backed Ernesto Valverde's Lions in Valencia.

Iker Muniain, Nico Williams and Mikel Vesga, the latter converting from the spot, scored Athletic's goals. The Lions had just one wobble, coming when Oscar de Marcos, trying to clear a difficult cross from Diakhaby, unintentionally tied the game two minutes before half-time, just after Muniain had put Athletic in the lead courtesy some great link up play with Ander Herrera and Iñaki Williams.

But Los Rojiblancos showed great spirit, regaining the lead almost immediately. On the stroke of half-time, Alex Berenguer sent the ball in the box, Iñaki held it up for his brother and Nico Williams beat Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Athletic came out firing after the break, giving the hosts no respite. Muniain sent a left-footed volley just over the bar and the final blow came in the 73rd minute, Vesga converting from the spot after the referee, with the help of VAR, gave Athletic a penalty for a foul on Nico.

Athletic saw out the game with ease and were justly rewarded for a match in which they played with plenty of ambition.

The draw for the last four will be held on Monday 26th at 13:00 CET, with Athletic's possible opponents being one of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona or CA Osasuna. The first leg is scheduled for the second week of February, while the second will take place during the first week of March.
