The champions squeeze through on penalties

The Lions maintain their penalty shootout prowess and reach the Round of 16 thanks to Unai Gomez's winning spot-kick

The champions are still standing. And they do so thanks to penalties. Just like those that gave them glory at La Cartuja. Los Leones defeated UD Logroñés 3-4 via penalty shootout, after 120 tough minutes finished in a stalemate.

The Copa is a very demanding tournament, which forces a lot from its participants. In recent years, Athletic's winning mentality has seen them win 25 single-leg knockout ties, against opponents of all shapes and sizes.

Last season we chased our dream and took out La Gabarra for the first time in 40 years.

UD Logroñés, at a stadium packed to the rafter, were a tough side to beat. They closed down and chased well on a patchy surface and had a fair bit of luck. But Athletic stood up when it mattered.

Athletic had the better chances. Alvaro Djalo and Gorka Guruzeta went close in normal time, while Nico Williams forced an excellent save from Kike Royo at the death in extra time.

But the goals wouldn't come, and in similar vein to what happened in Seville last April, the match went to penalties. Julen Agirrezabala led the way with a crucial stop to deny Alexander Gualda, Logroñés' second penalty.

Dani Vivian, Yuri Berchiche and Alex Berenguer, drawing on their Copa final experience, gave Athletic the lead.

Nico Williams missed the target with his effort, but Unai Gomez, who was never needed to take the fifth in Seville, hit the back of the net with a great left-footed shot.
