Athletic Club - Real Oviedo

Athletic Club defeated Real Oviedo 1-0 at San Mames on Sunday afternoon. It was a moment of genius from Nico Williams that decided the match, the winger dribbling past two defenders before scoring with an unstoppable left-footed shot.

The Lions had the chances to extend their lead in the second half, but lacked accuracy in front of goal. The sky is looking bright for Ernesto Valverde's side, who now heading into the break with a morale-boosting three points

Victory was a necessity and Athletic started the match very well. Selton Sanchez made a starting debut and brought some added flair to the team.

A fantastic turn and change of play by the attacking midfielder led to Alex Berenguer going through one-on-one with Aarón Escandell. The Oviedo shotstopper kept the Lions at bay early on as he also made a good save to deny Gorka Guruzeta.

Nico Williams' wonder goal came in the 24th minute. The winger carved his way into the box and sped past Nacho Vidal and David Costas with a silky stepover.

Even though Ilyas Chaira had a goal ruled out for being narrowly offside, Athletic looked comfortable. Unai Simón, who had hesitated in the moment, recovered with a great save from Leander Dendoncker.

Athletic completely dominated the second half, with Real Oviedo barely touching the ball. Selton, Guruzeta, Berenguer and others had chances to make it 2-0 but failed to convert.

Escandell made a double save from Robert Navarro and Berenguer. Mikel Jauregizar and Alejandro Rego also had clear opportunities.

It was a cascade of chances that kept the last-placed side pinned back in their own half. Three vital points for Athletic.
