Rayo Vallecano - Athletic Club

Athletic Club drew 1-1 at against Rayo Vallecano at Vallecas on Saturday afternoon thanks to a fantastic second-half equaliser from Iñaki Williams.

It was a match in which the Lions were forced to fight hard to maintain their current unbeaten run, which includes 10 points from the last 12.

Unai Simón's saves and a timely goal from Iñaki Williams, his first at the iconic ground, were enough to secure a draw against a Rayo side that made life difficult.

It wasn't the Lions' best game, but it was enough to keep the positive momentum going as we head into Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final at Anoeta with confidence.

Simón was in great form. His saves to deny Pacha Espino Alvaro García and Florian Lejeune, getting a finger tip to the ball to deflect the latter, kept Athletic in in the match early.

Rayo's pressure eventually paid off in the 34th minute with a dazzling move that saw Álvaro García set up Jorge de Frutos, who also had a second ruled out for offside moments later.

Just like two weeks ago in Oviedo, Athletic came out stronger after the break, with Alex Berenguer coming off the bench at the restart to return from injury. Alex set up Iñaki's brilliant volleyed equaliser in the 47th minute.

Iñaki and Oihan Sancet threatened as a win looked on the cards. However, between a shoulder injury to Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta and Rayo's substitutions, the Rojiblancos' onslaught came to a stop.

Augusto Batalla stopped a Berenguer effort, whilst Pathé Ciss had an effort ruled out for offside from an Unai Lopez free-kick.

It's time to focus on the Copa, and Athletic are going to Donostia in high spirits.
