Bittersweet end to the season at the Bernabeu

A dubious penalty given against Yuri plus Courtois deny Los Leones a deserved victory as they finish the campaign in eighth place

A match that summed up this season. Athletic outplayed their opponents and had a handful of chances to win but are going home with just one point.

Athletic came up against an inspired Thibaut Courtois, who saved a Mikel Vesga penalty at 0-0 and forced Oihan Sancet to score off a rebound to make it 0-1. And on top of that, the referee called a controversial penalty when Yuri accidentally struck Militao with his arm while jumping for a header.

The Lions are left without Europe, eighth in the table and close out the season with the feeling they haven't had much luck this season, neither with results, nor with injuries in the final stretch.

With it being Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio's final appearance, it was known there would be a lot of emotion at the Bernabeu, but Athletic managed it well.

Vesga could have put Athletic ahead from the spot in the ninth minute after a Toni Kroos handball, but Courtois went full stretch to deny the midfielder. Madrid barely threatened at the other end, their only chance of note a Vinicius effort which was brilliantly saved by Unai Simón.

Just before half-time, Yuri tested the Belgian keeper with a powerful long-range shot and Simon kept out Rodrygo in a one-on-one situation.

Athletic came out firing after the break. Oscar de Marcos stole possession from Dani Ceballos high up the pitch before playing in Sancet for his goal.

Unfortunately, Osasuna had also reacted at El Sadar. Sancet teed up Iñaki Williams to almost make it 0-2 seven minutes later but Courtois stuck out his right arm to keep it out.

To make matters worse, Vesga and Yuri picked up injuries, the latter coming from a horrendous Dani Carvajal foul that deserved a red card.

Benzema levelled from the spot to get a goal in his final appearance for Los Blancos. But even with one down Athletic did not give up and Williams tested Courtois again, this time with a left-footed shot.

Athletic wrap up the campaign with a great performance, but without European qualification.
