A peformance to be proud of in Rome

The Lions earn a great point thanks to a late Paredes goal while the actions of a few fans tarnish the image of all

Athletic Club achieved a well-earned point in Rome. Aitor Paredes scored the equaliser with an 85th minute header from a set-piece routine.

The only downside came when captains Óscar de Marcos and Iñaki Williams had to spek with a few fans for launching flares.

This is not our style. What the Club feels is what the rest of the 2,600 Lions in the stands who cheered unceasingly for Ernesto Valverde's team also felt.

A goal from Artem Dovbyk put Athletic on the ropes and it seemed it would be enough to give AS Roma the win.

However, Athletic never gave up and got their reward. Now it's time to rest and recover. After hosting Sevilla FC on Sunday, they will have to push hard at San Mames against AZ Alkmaar.

Under a spectacular atmosphere, with almost 64,000 spectators, Athletic started the match well, but it was Roma who took a grip of the game. Dovbyk had threatened earlier, only to be denied by Julen Agirrezabala. The hosts goal came when Angeliño swung in a cross which found the Ukrainian at the far post.

The second half was a different story. Athletic had more possession and took the game to Roma. Julen was once again there to save the Lions when Mathias Soule was through on goal after a Paredes slipped, while the substitutions helped Athletic find their rhythm.

The goal came straight off the chalkboard. An Alex Berenguer free-kick found Unai Nuñez who headed it back across goal for Paredes to power home.
