A rout to keep flying in Europe
An emphatic 3-0 win over IF Elsborg has put Athletic Club at the top end of the table and on course to reach the last 16
Athletic Club are still flying high in Europe. The Lions registered a fourth consecutive victory with a comprehensive 3-0 win over IF Elfsborg.
The win sees the Lions go joint top of the League Phase standings on 13 points, mathematically qualify for the last 32 and remain on course for direct qualification to the round of 16.
Unai Simón enjoyed a relaxed night on his return from injury as Ernesto Valverde's Lions dominated from start to finish.
By the fifth minute, the Zurigorri were already leading 1-0. A smooth corner routine involving Nico Williams, Gorka Guruzeta and Adama Boiro allowed the latter to get a first senior goal on his European debut.
Nico, who terrorised the Swedes all evening, helped put the game to bed in the 25th minute when he waltzed into the box and sent in a cross for Beñat Prados to crash home with a thumping header.
The final strike came in the 53rd minute. Adama was once again at the heart of the action. The left-back wonderfully controlled a diagonal ball from Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta before playing a low cross for Guruzeta to place in the back of the net.
The 46,325 spectators at San Mamés celebrated wildy throughout, thrilled by an impressive Athletic performance.
Andoni Gorosabel twice tried twice to make it four, but there was to be no more than the final ovation for the Swedes, who laid the traditional bouquet of flowers next to Pichichi before their San Mames debut.
Full steam ahead in the Europa League and now we turn our attentions to Vallecas.
