Athletic Club suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat on their visit to the renovated Camp Nou on Saturday evening.

Ernesto Valverde's side paid dearly for their mistakes in a match in which they had three clear opportunities to get back into the game with the scores at 1-0.

It's a match to forget as soon as possible. The concessions began in the 4th minute with an avoidable Robert Lewandowski strike and continued up until just before the half-time whistle with a loss of possession that led to a Ferrán Torres goal.

Before Ferran netted, Unai Simón had kept the scoreline at 1-0 with a save to deny Fermín López. What's more, netween the 35th and 40th minutes, the Lions enjoyed three great chances: two for Unai Gómez and another for Nico Williams, the latter coming after after a great cutback from Yuri Berchiche.

It was Ferran's goal two minutes into the first-half stoppage time that sparked Athletic's collapse.

A Fermin Lopez strike after the restart and an Oihan Sancet red card for a tackle on the Andalusian truly put an end the matter, much to the delight of the Camp Nou crowd, who booed Nico throughout the afternoon.

Athletic went into damage control mode and closed ranks. Even so, Gorka Guruzeta and Dani Vivian both had chances to pull one back. Simón then blocked a Lamine Yamal effort before Ferrán finished off a counter-attack to make it 4-0.

We will be looking to bounce back immediately this Tuesday against Slavia Prague in the Czech capital. The Champions League awaits.
