Athletic Club defeated Atlético Madrid 1-0 at San Mamés with a display of determination and energy that sees us close in on the European places.

Alex Berenguer sent the stadium wild when he met Nico Williams pass with a wonderful left-footed shot.

The Lions topppled Diego Simeone's team with an excellent. The goal came in the 85th minute, just after Unai Simón had caught a Alex Sorloth header, one of the visitors' few chances.

Athletic came out hungry. Oihan Sancet went close from a Mikel Jauregizar, and Jesus Areso, who was very active all night, set up Gorka Guruzeta for another notable opportunity.

Simeone's also created danger. Almada forced Simón to make a save with his foot, but Ernesto Valverde's team continued to dominate.

Sancet and Nico Williams lead the attack with their brilliantly and both had their chances but couldn't find a way past Jan Oblak.

The only bad news was an Aymeric Laporte injury. Nonetheless, Athletic continued to push forward and Areso provided another chance for Sancet.

The best thing about Athletic was that they continued to push hard after the break. Nico, with a brilliant move, sent a fine pass to Guruzeta at the near post, but the striker failed to score.

The clearest opportunity came in the 71st minute, when Simón reached Nico Williams with a long throw and the winger played in Sancet, whose shot went over the bar. Nico tested Oblak moments later with a low shot in the box.

After Sorloth's chance and Simón's save, the big goal came. San Mamés celebrated in style.

Now it's time to take a deep breath. The almighty PSG, the reignign Champions League champions, arrive on Wednesday. But our confidence is growing.
