Athletic Club have shown the world they can compete and win big things with their philosophy. In a dazzling comeback that will go down in the history books, Marcelino’s side beat Atletico Madrid 1-2 to seal a place in their second consecutive Supercopa final, ensuring they will face Real Madrid this Sunday.

Yeray and Nico Williams scored goals in the space of five late second-half minutes to make sure justice was served at the King Fahd Stadium, where Marcelino’s side received a rapturous applause for their performance.

It is not easy to come back against Diego Simeone’s team. But Athletic never gave up. Even after conceding an unfortunate goal in the 62nd minute, Unai Simón accidentally scoring an own goal when Joao Felix’s header bounced off the post and hit the keeper’s back before crossing the line.

Atlético gave the Lions a fright at the start with Felix having a goal ruled out for offside, but Athletic soon got into their stride. Striker Iñaki Williams had Los Rojiblancos’ first big chance, but Oblak blocked it.

The match did not really explode until the second half. Los Colchoneros’ goal came in the 61st minute and the Lions, far from giving up, threw everything they had at their opponents.

Barely a minute later, Athletic went close to equalising via centre-back Iñigo Martínez. The defender got a header to Iker Muniain‘s pinpoint corner but Oblak stopped the effort on the line.

Iñaki Williams then went close again but was once again denied by the Slovenian keeper. Athletic’s persistence was rewarded in the 77th minute, Yeray thumping home a header from Muniain’s corner.

The Lions did not rest on their laurels, going for the jugular. With nine minutes of normal time left, young forward Nico Williams calmly finished from the edge of the box after a defensive clearance landed at his feet.

Atlético were done and dust, José María Giménez’s red card the final nail in the coffin. Now the Lions turn their attention to rocking the boat once more by upsetting Karim Benzema’s Real Madrid. It’s time to rest and recuperate and put on another proud performance on Sunday.
