Vesga stunner keeps Athletic's run going

The Lions played to beat Sevilla FC, but had to settle for a point

A 1-1 draw against Sevilla CF at the Sánchez-Pizjuán saw Athletic Club maintain their best LaLiga start since 1969.

Mikel Vesga's tremendous left-footed shot in the 73rd minute levelled a game which the Lions were the better side and deserved to win. Athletic have now taken ten of the last twelve points and will still be in the Champions League places at the end of the day.

It was an eventful match. In the third minute, Sevilla took the lead after Oliver Torres finished from Gonzalo Montiel's cut-back in to the area.

Jorge Sampaoli's side had their fans pumped, creating two more chances through Papu Gomez, who was denied by superb Unai Simon stops.

Athletic settled down and grew into the game. Alex Berenguer almost equalised in the 24th minute, his left-footed effort being turned for a corner by Dmitrovic's fingertips. Nico Williams came to life on the right flank and almost played in his brother after skipping past two Sevilla defenders.

In the second half, the Athletic's avalanche arrived. The Lions came out firing, producing chance after chance. The equaliser seemed inevitable.

Oihan Sancet tried his luck from distance, Iker Muniain headed narrowly wide from an Oscar de Marcos cross, Iñigo Lekue had a go and then Vesga popped up in the 61st minute. The central midfielder, a 55th-minute substitute, scored with the outside of his left boot from the edge of the box.

Sevilla were there for the taking but Athletic could not seem to land the knockout punch. Nico Williams had an effort blocked by Dmitrovic in a goalmouth scramble, while Raúl García and Iñaki Williams went close with headers.

With the clock running down, the Athletic defence made life difficult for themselves in stoppage-time, Ander Herrera had to bring down Erik Lamela to stop him scoring into an empty net. Herrera saw red but saved a point for his.
