A miserable night at the Camp Nou

With Dembélé in fine form, Athletic were thrashed 4-0 in an unconvincing performance which saw Herrera and Dani Garcia go off injured

Athletic Club were not themselves at the Camp Nou. The Lions sunk to a 4-0 defeat against FC Barcelona on Sunday night. By the 22nd minute, Los Leones were 3-0 down in a game in where Ousmane Dembélé was in devastating form.

Los Rojiblancos were absent from the start and despite the size of the opponents, the display warrants some introspection. Unai Simon saved Dembélé's first shot, but Robert Lewandowski put the ball back in the mixer for the French forward to make it 1-0 with a header..

With barely a moment to recover, in the 17th minute, the Frenchman was at it again, this time playing in Sergi Roberto, whose shot took a deflection off Iñigo Martínez before going in.

Ander Herrera went off injured in the 20th minute. Unfortunately, his replacement, Dani García, suffered a similar fate and was replaced on the hour mark.

Demebélé once was again involved Barça's third, the French winger doing good work before Lewandowski finished after a superb turn in the box.

Athletic barely threatened in the first half, their only chance came in stoppage-time when Alex Berenguer had an effort easily saved by Ter Stegen.

The Lions improved after the break, keeping Barça subdued for the most part. But Dembélé had one more trick left up his sleeve, threading through a ball for Ferran Torres to finish past Simón. It was the final nail in the coffin.

Athletic had chances to get a late consolation goal via Unai Vencedor and Oihan Sancet, but Barça blocked their shots on the line.

It was an off night for Athletic who came up against an inspired Barça at the Camp Nou. Now the Lions will have to put this behind them and make up for it with Villarreal's visit to Bilbao next week.
