Epic comeback to beat Real Betis at San Mames
Athletic turn around a 0-2 deficit to beat Real Betis 4-2 with an impressive display
San Mames at its best. Real Betis were left on their knees after an unforgettable night in Bilbao in which Athletic Club produced a performance for the ages. From being 0-2 in the 10th minute the Lions fought back to a 4-2 win which sees us shoot up the table.
Mikel Vesga got the fightback rolling with a brace from the spot before before Gorka Guruzeta and Unai Gómez made sure Athletic took home all three points.
In a vibrant and passionate affair, Athletic showed all the trademarks of our identity: courage, determination and perseverance.
Real Betis were 0-2 with just 10 minutes gone. Willian José put the visitors ahead before Isco doubled their lead with a screamer.
There was no time to lose and Athletic went for broke. Dani Vivian threatened first, hitting the crossbar with a header, while Iñaki Williams also had a goal disallowed for offside.
And in the 25th minute, we got the first of two penalties - Nico Williams' runs into the box leading to both of them. Vesga made no mistake. In the 40th minute, he stepped up and converted again. In between Vesga's strikes, Iker Muniain had hit the woodwork with a great shot.
Ayoze Perez gave Unai Simón a fright as the match hurtled towards half-time, but it was Guruzeta who made it 3-2, the striker getting on the end of an Iñaki cross to make sure The Cathedral was rocking.
But the job was not done yet. Athletic defended hard throughout the second 45 and waited patiently for their chance to kill off the game. It came in the 85th minute, Iñaki and Alex Berenguer linking up before Gómez fired home a rebound.
What better tribute to Oscar De Marcos, who received a gift from Muniain for his 500 appearances, than a match that will go down in the history books.
