Goals from Iñaki Williams and Sancet tie up impressive victory of Los Leones
Athletic Club continue to be unstoppable and have now taken 13 out of 15 points from their last five matches, a run which keeps them in the Champions League places for the rest of the weekend.
On Friday night they registered an emphatic 0-2 win at Mendizorrotza, a ground where they have not won for two decades. Goals from Iñaki Williams and Oihan Sancet, which came courtesy of a great team move and a superb curling shot, set up victory against a Deportivo Alavés side who had won all their home games so far this season.
The Lions took the lead in the 17th minute with a flowing team move sparked by Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta, who came off in the second half with a muscle injury. The midfielder linked up with Mikel Vesga, who thread through a pass for Iñaki score his third goal of the season.
Los Rojiblancos could have made it 0-2 before the break, Sancet and Dani Vivian going close, the latter hitting the crossbar with a header.
The second half began slowly. Vesga threatened twice, first hitting the side netting and then shooting straight at Antonio Sivera. At the other end, Unai Simón was called upon to keep out Kike García.
Athletic killed off the match with 15 minutes left when Iñaki teed up Sancet, who curled a magnificent effort into the top-left corner from the edge of the box.
The Zurigorri relaxed a little with the lead and would have conceded late on if it were not for Simón. The shotstopper was at his imperious best to make he got his clean sheet.
