Athletic lead the way in Europa League
The Lions go top of the League Phase with a lesson in organisation, drive and power in Istanbul as Iñaki Williams netted a double

Athletic Club are leading the way in the Europa League. The Lions have gone top of the League Phase standings, with 16 points from six matches, and are edging closer to reaching the last 16 after notching five consecutive victories.
Iñaki Williams scored a brace to silence a rowdy Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium. His first came after Gorka Guruzeta pounced on a loose backpass before teeing up the no.9 to score into an open net. Iñaki's second was a thunderous effort from close range.
Right from the start, Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahçe SK looked like a lesser team against an enormous Athletic. In just the third minute, Guruzeta presssed Samet Akaydin into an error and then played in Iñaki for the opener.
Guru almost got a goal of his own after robbing Sofyan Amrabat of posseesion, but his shot was blocked by Dominik Livakovic, who then also denied Nico Williams a moment later.
The winger was brought off in the 37th minute after taking a heavy blow to his right knee.
Mert Müldür gave us a scare with a shot across goal, but soon Athletic made it 0-2 to the cheers of the nearly 1,000 Zurigorri fans in Istanbul. Aitor Paredes brought the ball out of defence and found Oihan Sancet, who played it on for Iñaki to fire home.
At half-time, Yeray, who had pick up a knock, came off for Dani Vivian. Athletic continued to dominate. Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta dominated the midfield as Sancet and Guruzeta had further chances.
The Turkish team were down to ten men, with Mert recieving a second yellow card, while Edin Džeko headed an effort straight into Julen Agirrezabala's hands.
Athletic saw the match out with ease. The dream continues, albeit one step at a time. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, in the box next to Jon Uriarte, was also in attendance to witness a magnificent Athletic performance.
