Athletic steamroll Cádiz in Bilbao

Guruzeta, Villalibre and Iñaki Williams bring home a second consecutive win at San Mames

Athletic Club beat Cádiz CF 3-0 with an emphatic performance at The Cathedral. It was the perfect way to celebrate the new San Mames' tenth anniversary and Los Leones could have won by an even bigger scoreline.

Second-half goals from Gorka Guruzeta, Asier Villalibre and Iñaki Williams led the Zurigorri to a second successive home win. Ernesto Valverde's side are now entrenched towards the top of the table ahead of Friday's visit to Mendizorroza.

Cádiz CF came to Bilbao in good form, having only lost to FC Barcelona this season, but there was nothing they could do to stop the Red and White wave at San Mames.

Athletic should have been well ahead before the half-time break. Oihan Sancet twice hit the crossbar, first with a header and then with a powerful shot in the box. It was just a matter of time before Los Leones scored and Valverde's men knew it.

Athletic were even more determined after the break. It was a miracle in the 58th minute, Sancet forcing a save from Conan Ledesma before Guruzeta had a shot blocked on the line in the follow-up.

Cadiz got their first sniff around the same time, Robert Navarro and Maxi Gómez linking up to trouble Unai Simón.

Then the levees finally broke. Oscar de Marcos, back in the team after a short injury absence, made a lung-bursting run down the right and put in a great cross for Guruzeta to head away for his third goal in five matches.

The forward left to a standing ovation and handed the baton to Asier Villalibre. Two minutes later the Buffalo headed home a cross from Iñaki. Minute 68 and the game was all but over.

Athletic kept the bit between their teeth and looked for a third. It came in the 90th minute via Iñaki, the striker played through on goal by a header from Villalibre.

The San Mamés crowd was in ecstasy. Simón rounded off the afternoon with two great saves to make sure he kept his sheet clean.
