Sancet leads Athletic Club fightback at Vallecas

The Lions move into fourth after an incredible Oihan Sancet performance saw them come from behind to beat Rayo

Two Oihan Sancet stunners helped Athletic Club comeback from 0-1 down to defeat Rayo Vallecano. These are three huge points that see Athletic move into fourth place in the LaLiga standings.

Two sublime right-footed strikes, each one better than the other, turned around a game that became an uphil battle early on due to Randy Nteka 13th-minute opener.

Amid an exceptional atmosphere, with Athletic fans out in force, Los Leones could have taken the lead in the first minute when Gorka Guruzeta, with a supreme touch, played Nico Williams through on goal. However, the winger failed to hit the target with a left-footed effort.

The Zurigorri soon had another chance after good throw-in from Iñigo Lekue was played on by Iñaki Williams to Guruzeta, who almost put it away.

Things got complicated in the 13th minute, when Nteka pounced on short backpass to Julen Agirrezabala to put Rayo ahead.

Athletic continued to play their own game and racked up chances. Augusto Batalla blocked denied both Yuri Berchiche and Alex Berenguer. It was hard to believe we were trailing at half-time.

Rayo, playing with a lot of intensity, made life difficult at the start of the second half, so Ernesto Valverde shook things up with a crucial triple substitution, bringing on Sancet, Unai Gómez and Oscar de Marcos.

Ten minutes later, Sancet struck a sensational volley after Nico found him at the back post. His second goal came in minute 77- The no.8 received a ball on the edge of the area and curled a spectacular effort past Batalla.

It's a confident start to a week in which Ernesto Valverde's side host Real Madrid and Villarreal at San Mamés. No doubt The Cathedral will be a cauldron for both clashes.
