A spectacular Athletic beat Real Madrid at San Mames
Los Leones notch a third win in a row and move into fourth place with a thrilling victory over Real Madrid

A breathtaking Athletic Club beat Real Madrid 2-1 on a night to remember at San Mames.
Ernesto Valverde's side moved into fourth place after their third straight win. The reigning Copa champions defeated the reigning LaLiga champions. The Cathedral is pure hell for our opponents. Athletic are on 29 points and looking up.
It was a fantastic evening, which started Giuseppe Bergomi and Maria Gstöttner being handed their respective One-Club Man and One-Club Woman awards. Even Carlo Ancelotti gave his former Italy teammate a big hug after the presentation.
Athletic came out determined to take the upper hand and then saw out the match with some resolute defending the Inter legend Bergomi would have been proud of.
Kylian Mbappé had a goal disallowed after a VAR revision and then Los Leones had their first big chance. Mikel Jauregizar linked up with Iñaki Williams and the latter's back-heel flick sent Alex Berenguer through on goal, but the winger sent his effort over the bar.
Thanks to a great Zurigorri defence, with Dani Vivian and Yeray in imperious form, Julen Agirrezabala was having a peaceful night. Berenguer gave Athletic the lead in the 53rd minute after beating Thibaut Courtois to an Iñaki cross.
The goal was a gift and as such, Athletic set about protecting it. Mbappé threatened Julen and in the 66th minute, the goalkeeper misjudged a Rodrygo free-kick and hit Antonio Rudiger on the head after the centre-back had hit the crossbar.
The referee gave a penalty Penalty and the Copa hero produced some magic again, this time denying Mbappé. San Mames was bouncing.
With victory seeming to be in the bag, the visitors scored an unexpected equaliser. In the 78th minute, Julen parried a Mbappe effort towards Jude Bellingham and the English midfielder hit the back of the net.
Gorka Guruzeta stepped up to be the Lion of the moment. The forward forced a mistake from Federico Valverde and then beat Courtois with a low shot.
It proved to be the killer blow for Real Madrid as San Mamés celebrated like never before.
