Athletic lay down a marker at El Sadar

Two assists from Nico to Iñaki and Guruzeta give Los Leones their first, much-needed, win of the season

Athletic Club got their first points of the season with a 0-2 victory against Osasuna in Pamplona. The Lions showed two sides of their game, mixing attacking flair with resilience, especially when they were reduced to ten men after Oihan Sancet was controversially sent off in the 60th minute.

Iñaki Williams and Gorka Guruzeta tucked away excellent assists from Nico Williams for our goals. The Athleticzales at El Sadar were in fine voice throughout and head back home with the perfect appetiser for Bilbao's Big Week.

At first the Lions struggled to deal with Johan Mojica's runs down the left, but they soon got up and running. The Williams brothers connecting to give us the lead. Iñaki outpaced the Colombian defender to volley home a great cross from Nico.

Oihan Sancet went close twice, before Nico showed his magic touch against, weaving his way into the box to set up Guruzeta.

Osasuna had two chances to reduce the deficit. First, Unai Simon denied Ruben Garcia in a one-v-one and then Mojica sent a free-kick over the bar. Athletic were also forced into an early sub, Iñigo Lekue replacing the injured Oscar de Marcos.

The Lions kept control of the ball and match, but the tempo slackened as the first half drew to a close. There was still a lot left to do at El Sadar.

The matter was complicated when Sancet received a dubious second yellow card. Shortly after, Simon pulled out two great saves to keep Athletic in the game.

Alex Berenguer could have made it 0-3 when Iñaki hit Osasuna on the break, but the winger missed the target when played through on goal.

Just before the final whistle Chimy Avila was shown a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on Berenguer. A very important win and on to Betis.
