A scrappy draw in Granada
Athletic miss a handful of chances in the first half and drop two points thanks to an unfortunate own-goal
Athletic Club leave two points behind in Granada after a difficult night in which they scored an own goal and squandered a serious of chances in a dominant first half. Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta accidentally headed into his own net to gift Granada a point.
Nonetheless, the Lions remain fifth in the LaLiga EA Sports standings as they get ready to welcome Atletico Madrid to Bilbao on Saturday.
It was a complex night set against the backdrop of an emotional tribute to late Granada fan Antonio Trujillo, who passed away at Los Carmenes on Sunday. With the clash restarting in the 17th minute, Athletic needed to hit the ground running to consolidate the lead gained through an Iñaki Williams goal.
The Lions started with intensity and had a flurry of chances to extend their advantage before half-time. They should have gone 0-3 up with the game put to bed.
Nico Williams missed by inches with a curling effort from the left. Oihan Sancet had two clear chances. One was blocked by André Ferreira, while the other he scuffed wide despite having an open goal in front of him.
Our best chance came via Iñaki, whose header from Galarreta's cross crashed off the crossbar.
Granada barely threatened before the break and were fortunate to get their equaliser in the 55th minute, Galarreta unintentionally sending a header past Unai Simón in attempt to clear a Ricard Sánchez cross. It was a full-blown accident.
Ander Herrera and Aitor Paredes both narrowly missed with headers late on.
