Serrano scores in draw with MSV Duisburg

Honours even as Athletic drew with the host side

Athletic Club drew 1-1 against MSV Duisburg in their second 45-minute friendly of the Cup of Traditions, finishing the tournament in second place behind Borussia Mönchengladbach.

A fine left-footed goal by Nico Serrano from Alex Petxarroman‘s cross gave Ernesto Valverde’s side the lead, but Los Leones ended up conceding ten minutes from time.

Forward Raúl García had the Lions’ first chance and then Jon Morcillo troubled the home goalkeeper with a powerful free-kick.

In the 20th minute, Nico Serrano scored at the back post after Petxarroman curled in an excellent cross from the right wing. Dani Garcia then missed with an effort on the edge of the area.

Athletic were on course for a second, but a lost ball in the opposition half and a cross into the box led to Duisburg striker Mravin Ajani heading past rookie keeper Ander Iru.

Iru turned saviour not long after, denying Marlon Frey from the spot after the hosts were awarded a soft penalty.

Los Rojiblancos kept looking for a winner, Raúl García trying his luck with a volley at the far post close to full time. However, it was not to be and the game ended in a draw.
